How to Split Your Finances in Marriage: A Conversation with Dr. Jenny Olson of Indiana University
Welcome to the Modern Husbands podcast, where any combination of Dr. Ross, Christian, and Brian host national experts who share winning ideas to manage money and the home as a team.
We welcome Dr. Jenny G. Olson, an Assistant Professor of Marketing at Indiana University's Kelley School of Business. Dr. Olson is also a Modern Husbands Advisory Board Member.
Her research focuses on consumer behavior within interpersonal contexts, such as the interplay between money and couples' relationship formation and quality (e.g., how partners' bank account structure, financial infidelity, and conversations about money affect relationship and financial well-being).
In other words, she’s going to help us understand the money management strategies couples use that actually lead to a happier marriage.
Listen as Dr. Olson responds to these questions, and much more:
- What drew you to this topic?
- Why did you choose to run an experiment, specifically? What did you find?
- Why do you think joint account holders fared better?
- Any differences by income or gender? What about the people who dropped out of the study?
- Do you think joint vs. separate bank accounts are ideal for all couples? Or are there important nuances?
- What's the one piece of advice you'd give young couples?
